Shaquille O'Neal Hangs Up His Jersey

Following an injury to his Achilles former Los Angeles Laker superstar Shaquille O’Neal has officially announced his long speculated retirement from professional basketball after playing professionally for nineteen seasons, this announcement comes after initial speculation following the aforementioned injury which the basketball player acquired during the 2010-2011 NBA season. Shaq announced his departure from the court in a rather unorthodox way that is still rather typical to Shaq’s personality when he posted a video with the announcement on Twitter.

The Lakers intend to honor Shaq and his basketball career by raising his jersey number, 34, at the Staples Center which will make it only the eighth jersey number to be retired by the Lakers, all of whom are members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and it is widely speculated that after the five year required retirement period Shaq will likely be inducted as well. In his career Shaq earned four championships, finished 5th on the NBA all-time scorer’s list with 28,596 total game points and several MVP awards.
